Fishing The Breede River

Bait:  Bloodworm, sand and mud prawn, pencil-bait and mullet are easily obtainable. Opposite the Breede River Lodge is a large sandbank where bloodworm, mud and sand prawns may easily be collected during low tide.  Mullet may easily be caught with a casting net. Chokka and octopus are good bait for cob.

Target species:  The same fish as in Gourits River are found here.  Monster cob enter the wide river mouth during summer. When fishing near the river mouth, chokka and octopus are the best bait, as live bait cannot withstand the strong currents here.  Live bait works better higher up in the river, as the currents are weaker.

Fishing spots:  Some of the most popular spots are Karoolskraal, Kragdrade, Streicher se huis, Bobbejaanskrans, Dammetjies, Goudmyn, etc. A friendly warning!  Be careful if you don’t know this river well and never go out in strong wind.  Many a life has been lost due to huge waves which develop during outgoing spring tide and strong south-easters.

Best fishing time:  The same as Gourits.

Please remember!

Never go out on any river before you have availed yourself of the do’s and don'ts.  Acquire all the necessary permits and licenses applicable on the river.  Consult local anglers about the best spot and the safest way to drive on the river.  Follow the local boats till you are confident to do it on your own.  Don’t drive too fast, especially during spring tide, for you may hit a sandbank.  Be equipped with all safety equipment at all times.

Obey the bait regulations and return any remaining bait to the river after an outing. Lastly:  A stranger is just a friend you do not know.  Be friendly at all times and help a fellow angler who is also eager to catch a fish.

Enjoy your fishing!
