BELMAN
(Umbrina Capensis)

Tackle:  As light as possible.  See sketch of terminal rig.

Although belman closely resemble the Kob species, there are two noticeable differences :-

1. The belman has a much smaller mouth.

2. It has a fleshy tassle under its lower jaw from which it derives its name.

WHERE TO SEARCH FOR THEM

They are mostly caught from beaches, either on sandy bottoms or on a bottom where rocks and sand occur.  Belman prefer calm blue water.  In fact, belman are often caught when the sea is too calm and clear for other fish.  Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to go after them.

BAIT

Bloodworms, mussel worms, sand prawns and white mussels are the best.

HOW TO CATCH THEM

A belman will normally just grab the bait and pull the fishing rod flat, but sometimes he may be a bit skittish. If the latter is the case and the belman fools around with the bait, the angler must strike cautiously at an opportune moment.  Once hooked, a belman is not easily lost because the hook is normally set firmly into its strong jaws.

The average weight  is 2 – 4 kg, although specimens of up to 8 kg are still caught from time to time.
